mosquito on human skin

Houston, Texas, is especially beautiful in the springtime. Leaves return to the trees, the grass gets greener, and flowers bloom. But spring also means that mosquitoes come out in full force, bringing with them itchy bites—and the spread of disease to humans and animals.

Many people hire professionals to regularly spray their homes or businesses for mosquitoes. But what if we told you there was another way to do it? Instead of relying on someone coming to your property to spray for mosquitos regularly, you can invest in an automatic mosquito misting system. In this blog post, Unique Outdoor Illumination & Mosquito Pros discusses some of the benefits of using an automatic mosquito misting system.

Automatic Mosquito Misting Systems

An automatic mosquito misting system allows homeowners and businesses to spray landscapes for mosquitos without relying on a professional to come to them. Home and business owners have several types of misting systems available, some of which can be discreetly yet strategically placed so as not to distract from the beauty of the landscape. These systems can be programmed to activate at specific times when mosquitoes are most prevalent, or they can be controlled manually.

Benefits of an Automatic Mosquito Misting System

An automatic mosquito misting system can be an effective tool in dealing with mosquitos. It also has many benefits when compared to traditional mosquito spraying, which we outline below. Please keep in mind that not all these benefits will apply to every type of mosquito misting system on the market. By working with a reputable mosquito control company, you can determine the best misting system for your situation.

Cost Effectiveness

By using a system already on your landscape, you won’t have to pay a worker to come out to your home every time you want it sprayed. Over time, the savings can really add up. However, the mosquito misting system still will need to be refilled and maintained periodically.

Non-Toxic and Environmentally Friendly

All insects play a role in the ecosystem—some more important than others. Depending on the kind of mosquito spray you use, honeybees and butterflies won’t be affected. But dangerous or bothersome pests such as mosquitoes, gnats, flies, fleas, and ticks will be killed. It’s important to note that this all depends on what type of spray you use.

Long-Lasting Solution

When a professional comes to your home or business to spray for mosquitos, the effects only last so long. With an automatic mosquito misting system, you benefit from repeat sprayings without a professional coming to your property multiple times. A good automatic misting system can last a long time with proper maintenance.

More Convenient for the Homeowner

With an automatic mosquito misting system, you don’t have to worry about mosquito sprayers showing up at your house at inconvenient times. Some automatic systems can even be activated from inside your home through a remote control or phone app. You can also set a timer to spray daily at a desired time, such as dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

Helps Prevent Disease

Mosquitoes can carry a variety of diseases. By using an anti-mosquito spray, you help prevent infection. The C.D.C. offers additional information on mosquito-carried diseases on their website.

Below are several diseases mosquitoes have been known to carry:

Yellow Fever According to the World Health Organization, Yellow Fever is transmitted through mosquitoes that are infected with it. Not everyone with Yellow Fever will experience symptoms, but symptoms include jaundice, fever, vomiting, headache, nausea, fatigue, appetite loss, and muscle pain with a prominent backache.

In the tropical areas of Central and South America, as well as Africa, Yellow Fever is endemic. According to the World Health Organization, “A small proportion of patients who contract the virus develop severe symptoms and approximately half of those die within seven to 10 days.” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that Yellow Fever is not found in the United States.

Zika Virus The C.D.C reports that the Zika Virus is spread by infected mosquitoes.  Symptoms are usually mild and can include rashes, fever, joint pain, and red eyes. If a pregnant person contracts Zika Virus, their baby may have birth defects.

In the continental U.S., the Zika Virus has occurred in Miami, Florida. It has also been found in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has been reported in other countries throughout the world.

West Nile Virus The Center for Disease Control states that the West Nile Virus (WNV) is “…the leading cause of mosquito-borne illness in the continental United States.” According to them, “About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. About one out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.”

The C.D.C. also states that you can reduce your chances of catching the West Nile Virus by wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and utilizing bug spray. According to the World Health Organization, the West Nile Virus is capable of causing a fatal neurological disease in humans. Bites from infected mosquitos are the most common way the disease is spread.

Heartworm

A mosquito bite can spread heartworm to animals, including but not limited to dogs, cats, ferrets, raccoons, and foxes. This disease can be life-threatening. Symptoms include coughing, sickly appearance, being tired after a small amount of physical activity, breathing problems, and signs of heart failure. For more information, please contact a veterinarian.

Interferes with the Mosquito Reproductive Cycle

The mosquito reproductive cycle is relatively short. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, about 100 at a time. The aquatic larvae then grow into pupae in as little as five days. In two to three days, the pupae develop into adult mosquitos that fly.

Unique Outdoor Illumination & Mosquito Pros utilizes a mosquito spray designed to interfere with the mosquito reproductive cycle. Not only does it kill mosquitos, but it also stunts mosquito eggs and larvae so they don’t hatch or grow.
